Welcome to the Uckfield Art Group's website. Our ethos is based on our motto - ‘Painting for Pleasure'.
We are an informal group of around 25 regular members who meet regularly to enjoy and develop our art. There are members from all abilities and ages (16+). We celebrate successes and although we have no formal tutor we use the expertise within the group to help those who need advice or encouragement.
The group meets every Tuesday from 7-9pm in Uckfield's Luxford Centre, at the top of the Luxford Carpark, just off Uckfield High Street. Members bring their own supplies and work on their own painting and drawing projects in the convivial and supportive atmosphere. We hold two main exhibitions per year to showcase our work.
In 2023 our summer exhibition was on Saturday, June 3. It was a great success with a steady stream of art enthusiasts coming through the doors. Our refreshments were popular too, with very little left to take home.
There was a tie for the semi-annual Tom Broad Award; Sam Bromley's "Sleep Tight, Koala" and Denise Revell's A quick snack" received the same number of votes so they will split the honour of taking home the award statue for three months each until our winter show coming up on Saturday 11 November.
The award was created in honour of a long term member Tom, after his death about ten years ago. He and his wife Nellie Broad, who predeceased him, had helped establish the Uckfield Art Group in the 60s.
For more details about upcoming exhibitions see the Notices and Contacts page. If you wish to know more about joining the group see our About Us page.
About Us
Uckfield Art Group was formed in the late 60s. Our members are all ages (16+) and abilities, from beginners to experienced artists. We are a friendly and informal group, always ready to welcome new members.
We usually work on individual projects using our own choice of media and source materials.
Occasionally we have a group project where members bring something on a theme and set up a still life display to draw or paint from life. These evenings give us the opportunity to develop our artistic abilities and share techniques and expertise.
Exhibitions are held at Uckfield'sLuxford Centre twice a year where we showcase our work, (and sell a few if we're lucky!) All members are encouraged and supported, but by no means obliged, to enter work.
We believe in art for recreation, relaxation and enjoyment. Friendships made in the group last a lifetime.
Where and when do we meet?
We meet every Tuesday at the Luxford Centre, Uckfield, East Sussex TN22 1AR, from 7-9pm. Coffee or tea is available throughout the evening (with biscuits!) at a very minimal charge to cover costs.
What does it cost?
Annual fees are £78 to cover the hall rental and expenses incurred when putting on the two art shows a year. These are collected half yearly, £36 in July and January.
The fees also cover an occasional guest demonstration or trip to see an out-of-town exhibition, such as the RA Summer Show.
We bring our own materials and equipment, though the group has some resources which are available to members at cost price.
If you would like to join us
Come along on any Tuesday evening and pay us a visit, see what we do, and have a chat. The first two ‘taster' sessions are free. We always welcome new members.
